Bhangra- Kala Chashma

This song brings back some great memories!  When I first saw this video I was like "Who's the cheese-ball in the aviators and what does Angelina Jolie have to do with this Bhangra song?" And yet, somehow someway, this very unoffical "music video", is so cheesy that it is actually quite Punjabi!  (Please... no hate mail!)

Bollywood Flashback: Guru

I'm not sure if "Barso Re" (from the 2007 film Guru) is old enough to be considered a true "Bollywood Flashback", but considering that it's almost 2012, I'll let this one slide!

Random: Living Single Theme Song

I know this is totally random, but for some reason the "Living Single" theme song is stuck in my head...

I also happened to come across this Living Single theme song parody. Not sure who the guy is playing all the characters, but it certainly made me crack up! This is totally something my sister and I would do in one of our videos!

Now Playing... SBTRKT

Here's an artist that I've been listening to a lot recently.  The first song I discovered on a recent episode of "Gossip Girl" (don't judge!)... and the other one I'm pretty sure I discovered either on DJ Kayper's show or in one of my friend DJ Ben G's mixes... or maybe both places? Anyhow, here are my two favorite SBTRKT songs at the moment:

Gettin' Desi With... Dilly The Kid, Icky, Pree Mayall & Push

The variety of pugs in this video is OUT OF CONTROL!  We've got nearly every style represented here by the way!  Oh and yeah, there's a mona too ;) Nah, but really though, this track is awesome!  Love the flow of the song and the video just ties the whole thing together!

Bollywood Flashback: Dil Hai Tumhara

Several years ago I watched this movie called "Dil Hai Tumhara" with a group of friends in India.
We lived in Jaipur, which at the time had absolutly NO nightlife. As a result, we ended up watching a ton of Bollywood movies (regardless of how good or bad they were). It was great for my Hindi, but I'll admit, it must have killed a few brain cells, if you know what I mean! Anyhow, "Dil Hai Tumhara" was one of those typical brain cell killing Bollywood numbers, created solely for the purpose of making money. Dil Hai Tumhara did however have two redeeming qualities: 1- a sad romantic number called "Dil Laga Liya"  and 2-  a psychotic blue puppet named "Rangeela."

The best (and freakiest) part of this movie is when you see the puppet running across the screen on it's own!  It even starts talking when it's no where near the puppeteer.  Though I was able to find a scene featuring the puppet, I couldn't find any of the super creepy scenes.  I think you'll get the idea though...

Random: Jay Electronica in Nepal

A few months back, while searching for Bhangra videos on Youtube, I came across this music video by Jay Electronica.  I was immediately drawn to this very raw (and kind of creepy) portrayal of Nepali nightlife!  I wasn't a big fan of the song ("Dimethyltryptamine"), but it's starting to grow on me...

Flashback Friday: N2Deep

This is one of my all time favorite Bay Area Hip-Hip songs!  Which reminds me, a Bay Area Hip-Hop Mixtape is long overdue, hai na?  Oh and this song really makes me want to sip a "Purple Chongo"!  What is a "Purple Chongo", you ask?  Well, I did a little research and it turns out it's just Grape Kool-aid and Vodka!  Must be a Vallejo thang!

PS- Is it just me or did Jay Tee just say "Johnny Z had his hand up my mini skirt"??? I'm just sayin'...

Jay-Z also used the same background music in "Show Me What You Got":

Here's where the original sample was taken from:

Bhangra: Ms. Pooja

Okay, so I think nearly every Bhangra musician I've featured to date has been male!  I think it's time that the boys share the limelight!  Miss Pooja seems to be one of the only (if not the only???) female Bhangra star out there who has made a name for herself in the industry! Here are a few of my favorite Miss Pooja songs:

Bollywood Flashback: Main Kya Karun Raam Mujhe Buddha Mil Gaya

The other day my friend Leena posted a song ("Main Kya Karun Raam Mujhe Buddha Mil Gaya") on Facebook from the 1964 Bollywood film, "Sangam".  It was such a cute video that I had share it with you...

Gettin' Desi With Heineken!

I just discovered this Heineken commercial the other day and was excited to hear a familiar old Bollywood tune!  Now, though I was familiar with the song "Jaan Pehchan Ho", I have yet to see the film in which it was featured: "Gumnaam" (1965).  Here's a brief description of the film taken from IMDb:

"Eight people are trapped on an island when their plane abandons them. They find a large mansion whose butler is expecting them. Then one by one, they die..."

Intriguing!  Makes me want to whip up a batch of my infamous Chaat Masala Popcorn and chug down an ice cold "Thumbs Up"!  Or better yet, I might just whip up a batch of Spiked Chai!

Flashback Friday: Today Was A Good Day

Ahh... this one takes me way back!  PS- I like to make that angry Ice Cube face just before I hit the three wheel motion!

Here's the remix which has kind of a "country twang" if you will...

Bhangra- Jazzy B!

When I think of Jazzy B, two words come to mind:  Cheesy & Sleazy. Think: Giant gold khandas, gold rings, gold earrings, goatees & highlights! But what he lacks in style, he more than makes up for with his amazing voice! So here are a few of my favorite songs. I'll start with an older one which exemplifies Jazzy B at his cheesiest!

I love this next song, and as you can see, both his music and his personal style are starting to improve...

"Soorma" is by far my favorite Jazzy B number!  It's got the right amount of Punjabi + Gangster!

Here's a new one from Jazzy B called "Nakhro."   I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I'm actually kind of feelin' Jazzy's style in this new video!  And just when you'd think he couldn't possibly wear any more gold, he goes and puts on some gold patloonLOOOOOOOVE IT! (Oprah voice)

Here's another new one called "Hukam."  Jazzy tries to get all "historical" on us in this one!  You can definitely notice the video budget increase!

Bollywood Flashback: Chaiya Chaiya!

This is one of my all time favorite Bollywood songs! It's got all the right ingredients: Dancing on top of trains, villagers with vests, and of course, pre-buffed out Shahrukh Khan (*see ripped Shahrukh below!)

Random: LMFAO Parody- "Sexy and I'm Homeless"

I came across is video the other day.  I'm not sure what to think.  I must admit, the lyrics and video production are pretty clever, but overall it's kind of sad :(. Thoughts?

Now Playing... Bad Rabbits

No time to make a mix this week, so let me introduce you to group that's new to my I-pod: Bad Rabbits.  These boys had me at synthesizer... What can I say, I'm a sucker for some crazy-ass sounds (NOT to be mistaken for crazy "ass sounds"!!!). These guys know how to bring back the oh-so familiar falsetto sounds of the 80's!  They're kind of like Prince meets N.E.R.D. with a hint of Run DMC.  Here's a small sampling of their music:

1. "Girl I'm Like Damn" (Live)

2. "Neverland"

3. "Can't Back Down" (Live)

Flashback Friday… MC Hammer!

Now everyone is familiar with MC Hammer's "Hammer Time" and maybe even "2 Legit 2 Quit".  But in order to weed out a true MC Hammer fan, you have to ask if they know of a little number called "Pumps and a Bump!"  And in order to find an MC Hammer SUPER fan, just ask them to describe the original "Pumps and a Bump" video! You see, this was Hammer's comeback song (or should a say the song that killed is career?) and when he returned to the seen, Gangsta Hip-Hop had taken over.   Apparently Hammer didn't realize that a zebra  THONGS aren't exactly "gangasta"... no matter how "well-endowed" a brutha may be!  So without further ado, I give you the ORIGINAL "Pumps and a Bump" video, followed by the second more tasteful "gangsta" version.  ENJOY!

Bhangra: R.I.P. Kuldeep Manak!

I just found out that Kuldeep Manak passed away yesterday.  While the name is certainly familiar (as many younger Bhangra musicians have made reverences to him in their songs), I had no idea what songs he sang, so found myself scrambling to find out more about him.  His Wiki profile is weak at best.  Here's an example:

"Many singers in Punjab take care in what they eat, be it hot, cold or pickle, Manak keeps an attitude of eat what you get and eats any type of pickle."

Hilarious!  I guess Bhangra musicians aren't high on the priority list for Wikipedia editors!  So anyhow, I did end up find some nice Kuldeep Manak songs.  He had an excellent voice and I hope you can get a sense of it in this random selection of Youtube finds:

This is by far the best video I found of Manak Sahib!  I love that he's just kickin' it with some friends, some Fosters and some Visky-Soda!  This brings back some fond memories of India!
