Now Playing... Digital Underground Vs. Velvet Underground

Someone forced me to listen to Velvet Underground the other day.  At first I was really excited... and then I realized that I was thinking of Digital Underground!  Don't get me wrong, 60's rock is great, but nothing beats listening Shock G!  Shock G is afterall the one who put the satin on our panties ;)  No, but seriously these guys are hilarious!  So on that note here are my top 3 favorite Digital Underground songs...

And here's the song I was forced to listen to... I could definitely figure out a way to work this in to a hip-hop set somehow ;)

PS- Did you know Shock G is part Desi???  His Nani was Half Pakistani/Half Indian! Kya baat hai! StumbleUpon

Flashback Friday: Kriss Kross!

Something about putting up Another Bad Creation last week reminded me of another child band I used to listen to: Kriss Kross! Okay, so I wasn't a huge fan or anything, but I must admit "Jump!", was a pretty catchy tune! I may have even owned a pair of baggy overalls and worn them backwards... yes, I'm totally serious!

Here is sampling of their top 3 songs:

Oh and how could I forget their "coming of age" song:  "Tonight's Tha Night"?

DJ Kathbombay Blackout!

All this talk about PIPA (Protect International Piracy Act) and SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) really got me thinking this week! I can't imagine what my blog (or any blogs for that matter) would look like if these acts were to pass.  I feel very privileged to have access to all of the amazing music and music videos (pirated or not!) available on the internet!  One of my favorite documentaries, RIP: A Remix Manifesto, seems to explain it the best:

Bollywood Flashback: Umrao Jaan

Umrao Jaan is definitely one of my all-time favorite Bollywood Films!  And "In Aankhon Ki Masti" is one of my favorite songs from the movie.  Check it out...

Flashback Friday (FAIL!): Iesha

Okay, so I've already broken my New Year Resolution to never miss a post :(  But that's okay, because while I was driving in my car this morning, thinking about what song I should have put up for Flashback Friday,  Another Bad Creation's "Iesha" came on the radio and I new it was destined to be!

This immediately reminded me of another song called "Aisha" by a group from the Netherlands called Outlandish.

And then that of course reminded me of the original "Aisha" by Rai singer Cheb Khaled.

Flashback Friday: DMX!!!

So I thought I knew everything there was to know about DMX, and then I met Sahab.  Not only does he do the most ah-mazing DMX impersonation I've ever heard ("ARF! ARF! Get at me DOGG! WHAT??? WHAT???"), but he is such an avid fan, that he introduced me to DMX songs that I've never even heard of!  Like this lil' DMX number about his Grandma ;)... yes, you heard me right, DMX loves his Granny (RIP) so much that he wrote a song about her... kinda sweet no?

Okay, so maybe that wasn't his best work, so here are a few of my favorite DMX songs to lighten up (or should I say Ruff up?) the mood a little...

When heard this last DMX song, I imediately remembered one of my favorite RDB tracks from back in the day:

PS- DMX is coming out with a new album in 2012!  I have to be honest though, since he's stopped using crack, I think he may have lost some of his "intense" edge. StumbleUpon

Culture Vulture: Addictive

"Truth Hurts" by Addictive was one of the first Hip Hop/ R&B songs I can remember that sampled a Bollywood song.

Apparently the producer DJ Quick heard the song below playing on an Indian TV show and loved it so much he just had to sampled it!  I love the way Quick described discovering the track:

"I woke up one morning, ... I turned on the TV and landed on this Hindi channel and just turned it up real loud," Quik explained this past summer. "There was a commercial on, and I just got up and went into the bathroom and started brushing my teeth. I'm brushing, and before I knew it, I was grooving. ... [The beat on the TV] was just in my body. I went back in there and looked at the TV — there was a girl on there bellydancing, just like real fly. So I pushed record on the VCR." (Except from an article on  VH1)

Universal Music Group was later sued by the company that owns rights to the original song "Thoda Resham Lagta Hai" by Lata Mangeshkar, from the 1980's Bollywood film Jyoti.

DJ Kathbombay's New Year's Resolutions for 2012!

This post is all about my goals for 2012 (some DJ related... others not so much!)

1.  Make More Mixtapes! --- I know I've been slacking (as you can see below, I've only done 2 so far this year!).  But hey, I did make more mixtapes last year than I did the previous year!

2.  Make More Mashups! --- I love making mashups, mainly because it makes the process of making mixtapes that much more fun!  When you're a DJ the repetitiveness of the top 40 can really take a toll on the eardrums! I love mashing up top 40 with Bhangra, 90's Hip-Hop, 80's music, Bollywood, Reggae and basically anything I can get my hands on!  Here are a few mashups that I put up on Soundcloud last year...

Culo Situation Pitbull Mashup by DJ Kathbombay

Hold Ya Phone Number DJKathbombay Mashup by DJ Kathbombay

DJ Kathbombay Mashup Rich Girl In The Deep by DJ Kathbombay

3.  Network! --- I've met some really amazing DJ's, musicians & new (and old) friends this year and I plan to continue networking even more in 2012!

4.  Exercise! --- I know it's cliche, but I really do need to exercise more often!  Believe it or not, this does directly relate to DJing... I always find that I'm much better on the ones and twos after a good jog!

5.  Live in the Moment!  --- I'll admit it, like many of us, I have a tendency to focus on the future or the past.  So this year is all about appreciating where I am right now in the moment and appreciating those around me...

6.  Say "Yes"! --- A few years ago my sister and I started a little thing we like to call "The Summer of YES!"   (I think there's a movie out there with the same concept, but I swear we came up with it first!)  So the entire summer, we forced ourselves to say "yes" to every opportunity that presented itself.  That means that, for example, even if you're all cosy in bed with your PJ's on and someone calls you up and asks if you wanted to come out and party, well, you have to get your ass out of bed and party!  Anyway, it ended up creating a lot of new opportunities for both of us, so I thought it would make for a good 2012 New Year's Resolution!

7.  Learn Ableton! --- I just found out about this program and I'm excited to learn how to use it!  I'm hoping it will help me make better mixes & possibly make some beats of my own???  Exciting!!!

8.  Never Miss a Blog Post!  --- Ironically, I forgot to put up yesterday's post!  It's the first post I've missed since I started the blog!  But, since it was before I put this post up, I'm not going to count it!

9.  Discover New Music! --- I'm always looking out for new (& old) music.  I guess this isn't much of a New Years Resolution, so much as it's a reminder to myself to incorporate some of this music that I find into my Mixtapes.  For example, thanks to my dad, I have a huge collection of various genres that I'd love to use, but rarely do (Blues, Portugues Fado, 60's Rock, Jazz, Bluegrass, Country (yes, I said Country!), Cajun Music, etc.)

10. Use more !'s ---- Oh yeah, and one more resolution was to use more exclamation marks in my blog, and I think I've already succeeded in doing that so far!!!
