Gettin' Desi With... M.I.A.

M.I.A. has been around for quite a while now, but in the last couple of years she seems to have gone, well, "M.I.A."  So it goes without saying that I was very excited to see her new video for "Bad Girls"!  There is so much eye-candy going on in this video too!  The colors, the desert, the early 90's Beemers, the Saudi headdresses, and of course, all those gold chains!   And who could forget the cars popin' sideways wheely's?  Was that even real?  I'll try it out and let you know...

Now Playing... Miguel

This is one of those songs that I've been putting on repeat lately.  It must be Miguel's vocal (and lyrical) resemblance to Prince!

PS- Morphus called... he wants his outfit back!  BAHHHHH!

No, but seriously, I must admit, there's something kinda sexy/creepy about an androgynous looking man who desperately wants to replace every member of your family!  But, alas, there will only ever be one Prince!

What's a Girl DJ to Wear???

Okay, so  I recently discovered this company in L.A. (KidViskous) that makes these supper cute neon pink & green nerd glasses necklaces!  I'm always looking for ways to accessorize while I'm on stage, so just couldn't resist!  I can't wait 'til they arrive!  And just in case you're wondering... yes, I fully intend to go all "Dwayne Wayne" on your asses like this guy...

They even made a video about them... look!...

Oh and speaking of videos, you know I couldn't resist putting up the soundtrack to "A Different World", right?

Flashback Friday: Eric B & Rakim

Any self-respecting Hip-Hop deejay has to give props to these guys!  I mean just listen to the skillz with which they sampled back in the day! <3

PS- How cute was Tupac in Juice??? Ha! That reminds me, I must have an all Tupac Cinema Marathon one of these days! That would include: Juice, Poetic Justice, Above the Rim and of course, every Tupac & Biggie documentary you can think of!  I'm thinking June 16th (Tupac's Birthday) would be the perfect day for a "Tupac-a-Thon"! And of course, a special "Tupac-tini" would be in order (courtesy of Fashionably Bombed of course)!... Or perhaps a "Thug Passion"? StumbleUpon

Now Playing... Childish Gambino

Just heard this song on the radio the other day.  I'm feelin it...  And I absolutely love the fact that he used my very first car in the video!  That's right, a 1974 Mercedes Benz 240D! Sweeeeeet!

And just in case you were wondering what it would be like to see them live...

Flashback Friday: The Pharcyde

:) :) :) I still love this song!  Whatever happened to these guys???

Wondering where they sampled the beats?  So was I...

1. "Summer in the City" by Quincy Jones:

2. "Are You Experienced?" by Jimi Hendrix:

3. "Weather Report" by 125th Street Congress (The sample is a bit harder to hear in this one...):

And last but not least, here's the guy who sampled them all:

4.  "Stutter" by Joe:

PS-  My favorite part is when Mystikal drives on the wrong side of the road screaming at Joe's cheating  girlfriend! Talk about Bros Before Hoes! StumbleUpon

Now Playing... Bad Boy 4 Life (La Mode Bad Mother Fucker Remix)

A few years ago, when I was an intern at Asylum Records, our office was on the same floor as Diddy's office.   Everyday I went to work hoping that when the elevator doors opened up I would bump into Diddy!  Alas, that never happened, but I did get to chat up L.A. Reid in the elevator once :)  Anyway, so I haven't been able to get this La Mode Bad Mother Fucker house version of P. Diddy's "Bad Boy 4 Life" out of my head!  Only when I sing this song I like to say "We ain't goin' nowhere cus it's Good Girl 4 Life!"  (FYI "Good" is my last name;)

For some reason I don't recall the video for the original song from 2002 ...

Kinda lame... I see why it wasn't so memorable :P  But I still like the song. StumbleUpon

Valentine's Day Love Song Countdown Runners Up!

Valentine's Day may be over, but I still have love on the brain.  There were so many Valentine's Day Love Songs that didn't make it to the count down!  Here are a few that were left on the cutting room floor:

1. Faith Evans:

2. Kanye West:
Normally you would have seen a Kanye song in just about any countdown that I do, but this time, the one "love" themed song that he has was actually one of the few Kanye songs that never really appealed to me.

3. Fat Joe & Ashanti:
I vaguely remember doing Karaoke to this song one time in NYC...

5. Diddy & Dirty Money:
This was definitly one of the most underestimated songs of 2009 in my option.  I might be slightly biased because I love any song that features exotic instrumentals.  This one definitly sounds like it sampled some Balinese music.

6.Robin S.:
OMG! This is a classic 90's song that should have been in the count down!  I love that Robin S is looking like a lawyer in her black power suit!

7. E-40:
This one brings back good memories of living in the East Bay!

8.Beyonce & Jay-Z:
I challenge you to find a girl that doesn't love to (or secretly love to) dance to this song!

Valentine's Day Love Song #2: Usher's "Love In The Club"

It's kind of a gross concept, but I still love this song!

It was yet another close tie with Usher's "DJ Got Us Falling In Love":

Valentine's Day Love Song #3: Snoop's "Gangsta Luv"

This was another tough choice: Snoop's "Gangsta Luv" vs. Snoop & Akon's "I Wanna Love You."  Ultimately I had to choose "Gangsta Luv" because, well, I guess I just have a few more good memories with that song.

Then again, nothing says LOVE like a bunch of strippers...

R.I.P. Whitney Houston

I just heard on the news that Whitney Houston passed away :(  Though this song wasn't in the top 10 Valentine's Day Love Song Countdown, I thought I would put it up her version of "I Will Always Love You."

Here's the original version by Dolly Parton.  It's a totally different sound but equally touching...

Valentine's Day Love Song #5: Rihanna's "We Found Love"

It just occurred to me that all the songs in my Top 10 Valentines Day Love Song countdown have all been Flashbacks!  So here's a more contemporary one for you. As sick as I am of hearing this Rihanna song over and over again on the radio (and trust me, as a DJ it's even more annoying!), I did like it for a few weeks when it first came out.  And in this case it's true that the video really made the song!

Valentine's Day Love Song #6: Timbaland & Magoo's "Luv 2 Luv Ya"

Does anyone else remember this one by Timbaland & Magoo from back in the day???

Whatever happened to Magoo by the way? I always loved that annoying dorky voice of his! Especially when he says... "The Bird Bird Bird, the Bird's the Word". That also reminds me of one of my favorite Family Guy scenes:

PS- Did anyone else notices that dorky dj "raising the roof"??? Was that really cool in 90's?

Valentine's Day Love Song #9: Justin Timberlake's "My Love"

Okay when looking at all the songs I own that contain the word "LOVE", I came across 4 Justin Timberlake songs!  Damn that brutha loves to use the word "LOVE"!  And trust me it was hard to choose just one!  But I ended up choosing "My Love", perhaps because the lyrics combined with his dance moves could make any girl melt!  I'm just sayin'...

Here are some of the runner's up!

Alright, so I think I said I wouldn't include any Bhangra or Bollywood in this top 10 count down, but MixtaBishi & MoFolactic made such a great mix of "Lovestoned" that I couldn't resist:

Valentine's Day Love Song #10: LL Cool J's "I Need Love"

I took a little break from blogging, but I'm back just in time for Valentine's Day!  Remember the good ol' days of exchanging Valentine's Day cards in grade school?  We were forced to give a card to everyone in class, so I would always try to give the "We're Just Friends" themed cards to the boys I didn't like (ie. everyone except the Redheads!  Yes, I had a thing for Gingers back then...weird I know!)  Anyhow, I digress. So, along the them of Valentine's Day I thought I would post a different LOVE themed song for each day until V-Day!

Well, as it turns out, there are a billion LOVE themed songs out there (and I'm not even including the Bhangra or Bollywood songs!)  In fact, LOVE is without a doubt the most commonly used song theme of all time!  So after doing my search I had to narrow it down to just 10 songs!  It was tough, but I did it!

Since today is technically "Flashback Friday,"  I figured that I should put up one of my favorite old-school "love" themed songs: LL Cool J's "I Need Love."

PS- I love that Def Jam's Rick Rubin had a fit when LL insisted on putting "I Need Love" on his second album! I guess LL is proof that even tough guys need love too.  And that reminds me of a song off of one my favorite soundtracks, Above The Rim: "Hoochies Need Love Too" by Paradise!

PS- This one doesn't count!  :P StumbleUpon
